What Actually Happens to Your Scrap Metal After You Sell It?
From our Bibra Lake yard to steel mills and smelters around the world — follow a tonne of scrap through the recycling chain and see why it matters.
You've weighed in, been paid, and driven off. But your old hot water system, car body or bin of offcuts is just beginning its journey. Scrap metal recycling is one of the world's oldest and most efficient circular economies — here's what happens next.
Step one: sorting and grading
At our Bibra Lake facility, incoming scrap is sorted into dozens of grades. Ferrous metals are separated magnetically; non-ferrous metals are sorted by hand, spectrometer and density. Contaminants — rubber, plastic, glass — are stripped out. The tighter the sorting, the higher the value of every downstream tonne, which is why grading is a skilled trade in this industry.
Step two: processing
Sorted metal is processed to meet mill and smelter specifications. Steel is sheared, baled or shredded into charge-ready feedstock. Cable is granulated to separate copper from insulation. Aluminium is baled by alloy family. Every process is about density and purity: mills buy metal by the tonne, but they pay for consistency.
Step three: melting and remaking
Processed scrap ships to electric arc furnace steel mills and non-ferrous smelters in Australia and across Asia. There it's melted, refined and cast into new billet, ingot and coil — which becomes rebar in the next building, the frame of a new ute, or the wiring in a solar farm. Metal is one of the few materials that recycles infinitely without losing quality: the steel in your old shed may already be on its fourth or fifth life.
Why it matters
Recycling steel uses around 74% less energy than making it from iron ore; recycled aluminium saves about 95%. Every tonne of recycled steel avoids roughly 1.5 tonnes of iron ore being mined and cuts CO₂ emissions by more than half. Multiply that across the 7,585 tonnes that moved through our yard last year and scrap recycling stands as one of WA's quiet climate workhorses.
The part you play
None of it happens without the first link in the chain: the tradie who bins offcuts instead of skipping them, the household that calls for a pickup instead of dumping, the site manager who specs metal-only bins. Every kilo you bring in feeds a system that's been recycling for over a century — long before recycling was a buzzword.
