How to Get the Best Price for Scrap Copper in Perth
Copper is the most valuable everyday scrap metal — but grading makes a huge difference to what you're paid. Here's how to prepare copper so it earns top dollar.
Copper consistently tops the scrap value charts, and for good reason: it's endlessly recyclable, global demand keeps rising with electrification, and recycled copper is metallurgically identical to mined copper. But two sellers can walk into the same yard with the same weight of copper and leave with very different payments. The difference is grading.
Know your grades
Scrap copper is graded primarily on purity and cleanliness. 'Bright and shiny' copper wire — clean, uncoated, unburnt wire of 16 gauge or thicker — earns the highest rate. Number 1 copper (clean pipe and heavy wire, free of fittings and solder) sits just below it. Number 2 copper covers pipe with solder joints, paint or light oxidation. Each step down the grading ladder can mean a meaningful difference per kilo.
Strip cable when it's worth it
Insulated cable is bought as-is and priced on its estimated copper recovery, but stripping high-grade cable yourself can lift your return significantly — a length of heavy building wire might jump from cable rates to bright wire rates. As a rule of thumb: stripping is worth the effort for thick, single-core cable, and rarely worth it for thin, multi-strand flex. Never burn insulation off — it's illegal, dangerous, and burnt copper is downgraded.
Separate before you arrive
Yards grade conservatively when metals arrive mixed. Five minutes sorting copper pipe from brass fittings, and bright wire from oxidised wire, means each parcel gets weighed at its own best grade instead of the whole lot averaging down. Bring copper separated in boxes or buckets and you'll be paid faster too.
Time the market — loosely
Copper prices track the London Metal Exchange and move daily. If you're sitting on a large quantity, it's worth watching prices for a week or two, but don't over-trade it: storage, theft risk and price uncertainty usually outweigh waiting for a perfect peak. For most sellers, a fair daily price beats speculation.
Sell to a yard with certified scales
Finally, the simplest tip: sell where the weighing is transparent. A trade-certified calibrated weighing equipment, visible grading and a printed docket protect your payment far more than an extra few cents per kilo from a yard that grades in the back room.
