Sustainability

Recycling is the product, not the pitch

Metal recycling is one of the oldest circular economies on earth — and one of the most effective. Here's the real impact of the 7,585 tonnes that moved through our yard last year.

The Impact

Why recycled metal beats mined metal

Metal is infinitely recyclable. Unlike paper or plastic, steel and aluminium can be melted and remade forever without losing strength or quality — the steel in a recycled car body is metallurgically identical to steel from freshly mined ore.

The difference is what it costs the planet. Recycling steel uses around 74% less energy than primary production and every recycled tonne avoids roughly 1.5 tonnes of iron ore being mined. Aluminium is even more dramatic: recycling saves about 95% of the energy of smelting from bauxite.

For Western Australia — a state built on mining — scrap recycling is the other side of the same industry: recovering metal that has already done a working life and feeding it straight back into manufacturing, at a fraction of the energy, water and emissions.

The circular loop

  1. 1

    Collection

Scrap gathered from yards, bins and pickups across the Perth metro area.

  2. 2

    Sorting & grading

Magnetic, spectrometer and hand sorting split intake into clean single-metal streams.

  3. 3

    Processing

Shearing, baling and granulating turn loose scrap into furnace-ready feedstock.

  4. 4

    Remelting

Mills and smelters melt the feedstock into new billet, ingot and coil.

  5. 5

    New products

Recycled metal becomes rebar, vehicles, cabling and appliances — then returns as scrap.
